Great Gallery Tool-->Google Calender!

I discovered a great tool to keep track of all of the art shows and museum exhibits that you want to attend. I've added it to the side bar. I will keep it fully updated with show openings, receptions, and closings. Also I'll add notable events that any self respecting art connoisseur should not miss. Just click on one of the events and then click event info to get times, dates, locations and even maps of the events. The best thing about the calender is that you don't have to keep coming back to the this website to see the updates. Just subscribe via Google calender and you'll have everything uploaded into you're own google calender. Then you can set up email notifications and even invite friends, family and colleges. I'll be improving the updates as time goes on to offer even more customization. I'm striving to make the arts easy to cultivate in your life; they truly are essential.

Nicholas Robinson Gallery-> Lars Elling: Fictions

Fantastically successful! "Fictions" on view at the Nicholas Robinson Gallery is a perfectly delivered! I had high expectations considering Lars Elling just won an award in Oslo, Norway. I was drawn into each painting's deep nostalgic narrative characteristics. I could have one of these paintings in my bedroom and stare at it for hours without it becoming repetitive. Extremely emotional and dreamlike these paintings were almost portraits of a stranger's childhood memories. This makes sense since Elling took parts of the images from old magazines and family photos, but that's not to say they look anything like a collage. The canvases were large enough and quit satisfying in size and effect. There is nothing that bothers me more that a piece of art that is too small. The space of the gallery was abnormal which accented the work's visual curiosities. Elling makes his own paints. I don't think the show would have been so successful if he had used conventional oil paints instead of the poignant egg tempera mixes.

Well worth a trip before it closes. Originally it was set to close July 3rd, but it has been extended. Over half the collection sold in the first weeks. A must see!

Collette Blanchard Gallery->Sean Higgins' Difficulties with Interplanetary Travel

Great concept. I personally don't jump with joy to go see abstract photography, but I was downtown and decided to check it out. Ends Aug 15th.The title caught my eye first and dictated the rest of my viewing which was a good thing, because without the title it would be difficult to discern what Higgins was trying to accomplish.

The photographs were transformative and creatively composed enough that a few of them got my mind thinking of flying saucers and alien landscapes. They had some sort of impact.

What really negatively impact the show was the limited scale of the pictures. They were a bit to small to actually transport me somewhere outside of the white walls of the gallery. The gallery was a standard space. Three white walls and a window. Another point that bothered me was that each photo had no relationship to the next. The photos looked like the were taken from three or four separate projects and thrown together. Unless the intention was to make this group of photographs difficult to view together, each piece would have been better off alone.

This is worth a look if you are passing by. The web photos could suffice.

NYC Photography Shows

By far the best resource you can find for photography shows and openings is the Photograph magazine. This is a bi-monthly magazine devoted solely to art galleries but specifically focuses on photography exhibitions. Each issue features listings of all the galleries with photography material scheduled to be on view in the coming weeks and has a handy map of each neighborhood with the galleries number plotted so you can plan your route for your gallery go. Very thoughtful!

If you don't want to drop by a photo-store to pick up a copy for $5 you can go to their website photographmag.com and check out the exhibitions listed, but they don't have that handy map in the web site.

After a Gallery Go Near Central Park in the Summer

One of my absolute favorite things to do after seeing some art is seeing even more art! Every summer the Public Theater of New York or "The Public" puts together free theater showings in Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Shakespeare in the Park is the program's name but it does not just feature Shakespeare exclusively nor are the productions cheap or low quality. Find out whats playing now! The stage is very unique and I've seen some very creative sets there. I've always gotten the free tickets.

You can plan your art adventure so that you finish up around the w81st st area and walk over to the theater and get on line. Pack a blanket because to guarantee your ticket you should get there between 5 and 5:30pm but the show doesn't start till 8pm. While your waiting you can mingle with the other people on the line and order food from Andy's deli which delivers directly to you on the line! (their chicken parmesan hero is delicious) Its all well worth the wait and is relaxing.

The plays will not fail to impress you and the setting is very nice. The perfect way to finish off a day of art.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art->Roxy Paine on the Roof: Maelstrom

The Met is displaying a sculpture on the roof you can see the official page here. The exhibition ends November 9th. I found the stairwell with mirrors all over the walls which exits the roof more stimulating than the exhibition itself. You can get an idea of the space in the video below.

The roof was surprisingly small considering the amount of space in the museum, and about a quarter or so is devoted to the "roof cafe" brandishing overpriced juice, snacks and bottled water. That said, the piece itself was interesting in terms of the complicated construction, but the complex construction was not made apparent by the composition. The bright stainless steel construction does not mix with the mid day sun reflecting bright rays into the viewers' eyes making it harder to appreciate. Overall, the piece does not give "viewers the sense of being immersed in the midst of a cataclysmic force of nature" but rather they were looking for another dimension of the piece which isn't there.

The piece brought into consideration the juxtaposition of man vs. nature and the gray area that is inherent with the assumption that man and nature are actually separate from each other.

It is not worth a trip just for this exhibit. The video would have done the trick for me.

Mission Statment of NYC Gallery Review

Greetings! My name is Kalki. I'll be you guide through the vast network of art galleries in new york city, keeping you up to date on the popular and unpopular (just in case). I have been in the art world for over a decade living in obscurity. Finally, after years of gallery going it became apparent that choosing a gallery to visit is just as hard as finding an apartment! Thus, this blog has been born! This blog aims to:
  • Notify about current Gallery, Museum, and Art shows.
  • Rate and Review the art and curating including the gallery spaces themselves.
  • Discuss Art openings.
  • Recommend where to go and what to do afterwards that rounds off the day nicely.
Your input is always encouraged! Please add your thoughts! Enjoy!
